Men's Cladagh Rings
Those of you who have heard about the significance and meaning of the cladagh ring will agree that, it is suitable for everyone irrespective of age and gender. But if you see a men's cladagh ring and have not been updated about it's true meaning, it might appear strange to see a heart ring for a man. Before we get into details about the cladagh ring let us assure you that, a cladagh men's ring is very popular in most European countries and the U.S too. The cladagh ring for men is designed to be a bit larger and stouter as compared to the ring worn by ladies. This is largely based on the convention that men's rings should have a bigger format.
The Claddagh Story gives complete details related to the history and tradition of this ring but, here is a brief explanation. The ring is named after a small fishing village (now a developed town) in Ireland - the village was named Claddagh, time was about four centuries ago when the practice of slavery was widespread. A young fisherman named Robert Joyce was one day captured by pirates who attacked the boat in which he was sailing. Robert was sold as a slave to a wealthy goldsmith. As he learnt the trade from his master, the young man kept thinking of his beloved who was left behind in the same village. The mental torment of being separated from his beloved started taking it's toll on Robert's work, this was surely something that his master would not accept. In a desperate bid to salvage mental strength, he decided to make something for his beloved, it was a ring that he could give her when he was one day freed from slavery. The idea was to give himself something positive to look forward to. He hoped that the ring would show her just how much he loved and missed her. A couple of years later, the young man was freed from slavery and as expected, rushed back to his small village. He was thrilled to see that his beloved was still waiting for him. He gave her the ring and the couple were soon married and built a happy family in the village. It was the features in the ring and their implied meaning that established the jewel as, one of the most meaningful jewels in history. Robert Joyce expressed his feelings for his beloved through the heart, crown and hands. You can well imagine the stress and strain under which this ring was crafted and the young man was no specialist designer as well. The heart denoted love, the crown showed his loyalty for her and the hands symbolized togetherness through good times and rough. The ring was named Cladagh after the small fishing village.
The love as expressed in the cladagh ring need not always imply an engagement or wedding, it can be love between mother and daughter or even two very good friends. A girl could buy a men's cladagh ring for her boy friend, there is really no major matrimonial commitment involved. We did mention above that the cladagh ring is suitable for ladies and men and both, jewels will have the 3 essential features. The significance of the ring is held in the hands, crown and heart, so these would remain the same for men's and ladies rings. The cladagh ring for a lady would be a bit more smaller with more feminine hands and fingers.
